    What's in my vegetarian fridge? Hi my foxes! As requested, here's a peek into our fridge, of course the exact contents changes regularly, as foods come in and out of season and your menu changes. But generally it looks something like this. Plenty of vegetables for steaming or cooking stir-fry in our wok, salads, etc. Fresh fruit, berries and dates for snacking and treats. Water is our main beverage of choice. But it's great to have other options such as fruit-infused water, mineral water with a splash of lemon or juice, coconut water (ideally fresh from the coconut, but that's not always an option), coconut milk (I use for making chai coconut lattes or smoothies), green tea (I usually make at home from tea bags, but having a cold bottle to grab on the go is handy when you're in a hurry...

Mexican food, especially tacos with tortilla chips, pico de gallo and guacamole are always a favorite at our house. I limit my dairy intake since it triggers cystic acne on my cheeks. But I've found I do much better with dairy products that are made outside the USA. (My guess is, there are too many hormones in our dairy in the States). A few other regular favorites that weren't in our fridge at the time of filming: Tofu, asparagus, lemons, baby bok choy, cucumber, broccoli, spinach, kale, mixed salad greens... Though the bag of stir-fry veggies has some of those already. Neither Michael or I follow any kind of "diet", we just do our best to eat clean, fresh foods 90% of the time and the other 10% is whatever other treats we want. Not only vegetarian lifestyle, not eating anything grown out of chemicals, pesticides, fertilisers. Try to become more and more organic because, chemicals create a toxic mental setup in your system. I am giving you the straight conclusions - try to become more and more natural, organic consumer. It is good for your seeking, good for your mental balance, good for you, over all it is good for your enlightenment and manifesting all these powers. In a world of FDA regulation and GMOs, you never know what the hell is inside your food. A disgusting amount of chemicals and additives go into processed foods. The worst part is, many are LEGALLY allowed to go unlabelled. In the last few years of cutting out animal products from my diet, I've slowly learned about foods that I was still eating that actually weren't vegetarian! I felt so blindsided and grossed out, so hopefully this can help enlighten you to some very unsafe and disgusting ingredients that are being added to common foods (sometimes without our knowledge!). Whether you are vegetarian or not, these are things you reallllllly don't want to be consuming...trust me. Here are some shocking foods that seem safe and meat free, but actually contain animal products! It is super important for vegetarians (or anyone that cares about their health) to know what to look for in their foods. These ones snuck up on me for far too long! -Marshmallows: contain GELATIN aka animal bones and ligaments -Veggie Soups: usually based in BEEF and CHICKEN broths -Refried beans: LARD (or animal fat) is often added for flavour -Cheese: RENNET, the stomach lining of slaughtered calves, is used for processing -Red candies and foods: E120, also known as CARMINE, carminic acid or natural red #4, is extracted from the ground-up shell of the female cochineal insect. Cochineal can be found in food coloring, jellies, lollypops, strawberry milk flavoring, strawberry flavored yogurts, and many other red colored foods. Cochineal is also used to color lipsticks, clothing and pill coatings. -Gummy candies: contain GELATIN and RED DYE -White sugar: often refined and bleached through charred cattle BONES..yum! -Yogurt: some brands contain GELATIN and FISH OIL -Natural vanilla flavor: made from beaver butt juice, called CASTOREUM..use it to mark their territory and its FDA approved to be unlisted.. -Orange Juice: some brands add fish oil (OMEGA 3S) and LANOLIN (sheeps wool ) for vitamin d -Bananas: sprayed with shellfish derivative to preserve called CHITOSAN -Bagels and breads: L CYSTEINE- dough conditioner made from goose and duck feathers, and sometimes human hair -Hard coated candies- SHELLAC from bug juice to make outer coating -Beer and wine: clarified using ISINGLASS, which is a gelatin from fish bladders; Guiness is one brand to look out for! -Worcestershire Sauce- ANCHOVIES, check all condiments! *Capitalized names of ingredients to look out for! Jill Ovnik, Vegan-Gal.com: It is my goal in life to share my experience with the changes that I have made with food and hopefully to get people excited about plant-based meals! Becoming a vegetarian and then a vegan has changed my body - inside and out, my mind, my heart and soul for the better. What's not to get excited about?! The best part is that I enjoy food more than I ever have! I now know the secret to good tasting food is in the seasoning. I remember opening up a pound of bloody ground beef. Imagine you're doing it right now. Dump it in your pan to start getting dinner ready. Before you add seasoning ... How does it smell? How does it look? Would you eat it plain? Once I made the decision it only took a short while before ALL desire for meat had left me completely! I now start my dinners with basic plant foods that don't ever gross me out in any way. What a lovely way to eat. The DVD explains how after 32 years of eating ANYthing, I started reading about the enormous health and environmental benefits to being vegetarian. I care about people and my own health but most important to me was to read about the massive environmental destruction and pollution directly caused by eating meat. It's truly staggering. Yet, here was my chance to not be part of the problem, to make a difference for the sake of my children, and the future. A scary proposition but a small sacrifice in the scheme of it all. I cut out all meats but still ate fish and dairy for 4 more years until the time was right for me. I know how important timing is. If you're not ready to make a change, you won't. But, for me, honest facts were like little seeds planted in my head somewhere just needing some time to germinate. I had made strides in this one area, by cutting out all meats, I had begun to feel successful and more comfortable with every passing day. I felt that God was rewarding me for my sacrifice. Giving up a food category that had no merit for my body, the planet and certainly the animals, I was indeed rewarded beyond what I ever thought would happen. Public Speaking Engagements ... I began teaching workshops at Wild Oats grocery store, I did a 2 week nutritional seminar for 14 volunteers at a local company. I got into my son's 2nd grade classroom one hour a week to facilitate the most awesome food curriculum (Food Is Elementary) and I spoke at my women's group. I worked on that speech for 6 months at least. I worked on it so long and hard that my husband suggested we video tape it. Here's where it helps to have talented friends, as we do in the Awesome Bill Youmans, Big time Chicago Director, who came out to tape my presentation. I was proud of my hard work and the factual basis of the video yet another seed was planted when friend said she wanted to know more! She wanted to know how I made those fruit smoothies I talked about on the video. My vision was expanded and we added segments from 2 grocery stores, 3 restaurants, and 3 cooking demonstrations from my kitchen in Hinsdale, Illinois. The DVD and website have only come about because I'm a lucky gal. I have a wonderful family and plenty of supportive, motivating, dynamic girlfriends who inspire me to do more with my passion for this subject. I'm especially grateful for Vida Haried & Carol Little who have seen me slowly change and kept right on pumping me up with more information and new recipes to get excited about. I'm grateful to my husband and children who have a wife and mom that may look a little wacky in this Midwestern culture. They've put up with a lot. And, I'm so so grateful for all the doctors and researchers out there that are more concerned for human health and the truth than for profits. Right now, my vision for www.Vegan-Gal.com is to raise awareness. Educate, motivate and support people to make a positive change in their life if they want to. I also hope to get more people looking at their school lunch program and taking action with Dr. Demas's Food Is Elementary Curriculum, It's awesome! V DAY 32! Continuing on my plant based recipes, today we make Burgers! This was after a long a weekend of workouts and i felt like a needed a protein push and something heavy to munch on. RECIPES start at 5:30 Each Recipe makes two patties. For each of the burgers, i just bought some fresh buns, put in a thick slice of tomato, some sliced onions, organic ketchup and lettuce. To cook the patties, once formed. I wanted to try and grill them, just to see if they would hold, which they did, but it took some grace to flip them without breaking them (unless you add the thickeners i suggested). If you want an easier time, thicken them and then pan fry them with a little oil. Most of the ingredients that need to be cooked, will be already, so all you need to do is get your cooking mechanism to a medium heat, nothing to aggressive and leaving the patties on for about 8mins per side. These mixes should keep in the fridge for about 3 days, well sealed. Cauliflower Pea Burger 1 cup of cauliflower florets, washed 1 tbsp of olive oil 1 tsp of peanut oil 2 tbsp garlic 1/4 cup minced onions 1 tbsp tahini 1/3 cup quinoa 1/4 green peas 1 tbsp chia seeds 3 tbsp bread crumbs (i used chickpea crumbs) 1 pinch of salt and pepper 1. Place the cauliflower in an oven tray, drizzle with olive oil. Roast in a 170 c. oven for 20mins. 2. Fry off the garlic and onions until tender in peanut oil. 3. Mix everything together in a food processor. Blend until smooth but still with some texture. Red Bean Burger 2/3 cup of red beans 1/3 cup rolled oats 2 tbsp amino 4 tbsp cup vital wheat gluten (to make it thicker, add 4 more tbsp and 2 tbsp of regular wheat flour) 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp of peanut oil 2 tbsp garlic 1/4 cup minced onions 1. Fry off the garlic and onions until tender in peanut oil. 2. Put all the ingredients in a food processor or blender until smooth. Mushroom Burger 2 large portobello mushrooms 1/4 cup raw walnuts 1 tbsp oil 2 tbsp tamari 2 tsp white miso 1 tsp of peanut oil 2 tbsp garlic 1/4 cup minced onions 1/3 cup cooked red rice 1 tsp cayenne 1/2 tsp black pepper 1/2 tsp sesame oil 4 tbsp vita wheat gluten (to make it thicker, add 1/4 cup bread crumbs and 1/4 cup vita wheat gluten) 1. Fry off the garlic and onions until tender in peanut oil. 2. Blend the mushrooms and the walnuts. In a seperate pan, fry the mix off with some olive oil for 5 mins on low heat. 3. Add the miso and tamari to the mushroom mix. 4. Transfer to a food processor with the onion mix, spices, sesame oil, rice, vital wheat gluten and pepper. Blend everything.
